domain names
A domain name is your identity on the web, when someone types your name in the address bar of a browser, your website will appear.
Domain names are made up of the top-level domain (TLD) such as .com, .uk, .net and a second and sometimes third-level domain. This site, for example, has the top level domain of .com and the second level domain of idealeye, our business name. A .uk name will have three levels. for example, idealeye.co.uk
Domain names are registered through approved agents (registrars) and a periodic renewal fee is payable in order for you to continue to use the name. You do not, in essence, own the domain name, rather, you own the "right to use" it by paying a registration fee. If you do not renew the name and pay the fee, then the registrar will put the name back on the open market.
At idealEye, we can register the domain name for you and bill you at appropriate periods or you can purchase the name yourself through one of our recommended registrars.
When considering a domain name you may decide to use the name of your already established business. First you must check that it is still available and has not been registered by someone else. This can be done by going to a registrar and putting in the name. You will find that different top level domains cost different amounts.
When deciding on a top level domain name you will find that .com are the most popular and you may not be able to register the name you want as it may already be taken. If you are in the UK a .co.uk is a good choice as it lets visitors and search engines know that you are based in the UK if this is an important factor for you.
More information on domain names ( .com, .net, .org) can be found at ICAAN (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers) or InterNIC, their website providing the public with information on domain name registration services.
